It was a big winner for Cars 3 at the box office this weekend!
The threequel opened to the top spot across theaters in North America, taking in an estimated $ 53.5 million from 4,256 openings over the last few days. That’s enough to beat out Wonder Woman, which had been ruling the box office for a few weeks now!

Also, since Cars 3 is skewing slightly male and today is, of course, Father’s Day, box office watchers are expecting today may be bigger yet, with final Monday numbers expected even slightly higher based on projections! Nice!
Of course, Wonder Woman still continues to impress, even though it’s not at the top of the box office. The movie took in about $ 40.8 million this weekend, giving it a domestic total of $ 274.6 million, and more than $ 571 million worldwide.
Soon, Wonder Woman will eclipse Mamma Mia! (2008) as the top-grossing female-directed movie of all time!!!
Other movies of note this weekend: the Tupac Shakur biopic All Eyez On Me did much better than projections, pulling in $ 27.1 million to finish third behind these two.

And beyond that, Mandy Moore‘s shark thriller 47 Meters Down was a surprising winner, taking in more than Scarlett Johansson‘s Rough Night in something of a surprise box office upset.
